"Thank You voters for your support in electing me. Your mandate is a clear message that taxpayers want a stronger voice in the operation of the Monarch Fire District. I vow not to let you down."
RESIDENTS’ NEEDS COME FIRST
Fast response by well-trained paramedics and firefighters are Jane's number one priority and she will assure you receive this excellent level of service.
A Proven Record
Jane has served the taxpayers as State Senator for many years and will continue to safeguard your tax dollars while part of the Monarch board.
The following is quoted directly from the Monarch board minutes from October 4th, 2011. During the previous board meeting, the Board voted 2-1 (Swyers and Evans for, Harris against) to increase the residential tax rate. During this board meeting, the board voted to reverse this decision. These are some of the concerns expressed by Jane Cunningham during the Citizen's Comments. (Original Board Minutes available at MonarchFPD.org)
SENATOR CUNNINGHAM: Thank you, very much. For the record, again, my name is State Senator Jane Cunningham. I represent the Seventh Senatorial District and I am a taxpayer of the Monarch Fire District. I really am here today not only for myself as a taxpayer because my rates just went up... but, I feel compelled on behalf of my constituents, because my constituents have been talking to me for years about how much it hurts with their property tax increases.
...And, as [Allen Icet] said, during his years, and also during mine, which has been more than a decade, we have never, never in the State of Missouri, during our time, raised taxes. And, yet, we were at -- we are able to continue the services needed by the State of Missouri.
I was really disappointed to learn both from your transcripts of your meeting... about the Board vote to raise taxes in spite of, as has been stated before, of the campaign promises. And, Mister Swyers, I guess I feel particularly disappointed in you, because we had a personal conversation in which not only did you promise my constituents that you would not support any tax increases, you told me that personally. And so I'm terribly disappointed that you have reneged on your promises to me and to my constituents in this area.
...I have the sheet that you voted on and it says, 2011 rate, .433; 2012 rate, .466; that is a 3.3 cents per $100.00 valuation increase. If you divide that out, it is a 7.6 percent increase on residential property. ...That is huge. That is absolutely huge in these economic times.
...And now I want to finish with asking you, please, to reverse your vote.
"I exercised my First Amendment rights by having a sign placed in my yard supporting Jane Cunningham, one of the candidates for the Monarch Fire Protection District Board of Directors. The next day, on Sunday morning March 17, an individual knocked on my door, identified himself as a union member, said that he supported the candidate running against Jane, and he requested that I do the same."Read more...
"I totally agree that our firefighters are overpaid. I read similar comparisons in the Post Dispatch last year and was shocked at the high salary for high school educated folks, not to mention that their salaries are quite out of line with other fire departments..."Read more...
